So the Phillies are off to a stunning 1-4 start. Who would of thought? Starting pitching has come up with a whopping 5 earned runs though 25.1 innings while the bullpen has given up 4 earned runs through 10.2 innings. Although the bullpen has given up their fair share of runs, this is not the key to my concerns.
So far through the 2012 season, we have seen four different starting 1st baseman. What does this mean? If you ask me, I see a total of 4 hits out of 29 at bats from the four players who have played 1st base this season. So it really doesn’t matter who is out there, they are not hitting the ball. Mayberry Jr. did make a crucial mistake playing 1st base today to go along with Wigginton’s tremendous error last night. Ironically, Wigginton and Mayberry Jr. are the two 1st baseman that have got hits so far this season. Maybe we should leave Mayberry Jr. in leftfield where he is consistent defensively and you keep his power in the lineup. Problem here is that you bench JP (Juan Pierre) who has an RBI single to his name that only two others on the team have. I do like Wigginton at 1st base though. He has proven he can hit the ball over the years and I feel he can adapt to the position with a little playing time and practice. I also have noticed that only Hunter Pence has more RBI’s then rookie 2nd baseman Freddy Galvis. Freddy happened to get his first hit and first two RBI’s of the season today in the bottom of the 7th inning.
We are only 4 games into the season. Maybe I am over reacting. Maybe our players just need some time to warm up. At the end of the day, the Phillies offense have only scored 8 runs with only 4 extra base hits. There are players in the league that can match these number single handedly (Miguel Cabrera). Although I have tremendous faith in our pitching, a lack of run support is going to cause a lot of pressure and we all know that. Is Charlie to blame? Is mix and matching players without giving them time to settle in the problem? Do our players need a consistent spot in the lineup to get comfortable? Is our pitching going to hold up with the lack of offense? Should we start worrying? There a lot of unanswered questions so far and I will let you answer them yourself. All I am going to say is that the Phills are really going to be Fighten’ if the offense continues to be unproductive.
